The Dutch Government is proposing a 29% tax rate in the legislation of Online Gambling in the Netherlands.
What’s the Impact?
Throws into doubt the attractiveness of the Dutch market as a newly regulated market.
Who Should Be Worried?
Established operators with a large exposure to the Dutch market will bear the biggest brunt of this, most obvious example is Unibet.
Does Anyone Win?
On paper, the state operators and licensed lotteries such as the Postcode Loterij are probably the biggest winners. This helps them all defend their market share. However in our view unless significant innovation takes place their market share will be easily reduced by new entrants.
Other winners unfortunately are unlicensed operators who can afford to be far more generous with bonuses.
Should I Still Consider Entering the Dutch Market?
We’d advise yes, given the 29% tax you need a local Dutch strategy that puts you into the top 3 operators.
